Wastewater Scientific Officer

Flexsource NI are currently recruiting a Wastewater Scientific Officer covering the Belfast area, on a temporary full-time basis, with a salary of £14.59 per hour.

This role undertakes a range of performance activities to optimise Wastewater Treatment Works processes, minimizing risk of pollution incidents, protecting the environment and public health, and ensures regulatory compliance.

Responsibilities:

With a full job description available upon request, you will:

·        Conduct on-site testing (e.g., clarity, turbidity, NH₃(N), FeSO₄ dose rate) and assess overall WwTW process and operational performance.

·        Identify underperforming sites, carry out representative sampling, and ensure accurate lab submissions and documentation.

·        Organise and manage automatic samplers for regulatory and operational sampling across multiple sites.

·        Plan and analyse sampling runs using LIMS to identify poor process performance and recommend improvements.

·        Liaise with Environmental Regulation and NIEA teams to advise and implement pollution mitigation measures.

·        Collect, analyse, and report scientific data using Microsoft and analytical tools to support management decisions.

·        Validate and calibrate process instrumentation (e.g., DO, MLSS probes) and perform root cause analysis on process issues.

·        Make informed field decisions impacting regulatory compliance, providing sound scientific justification for process adjustments.

·        Train and support operational staff on sampling apps, tools, analytical techniques, and compliance procedures.

·        Monitor odour control performance, investigate complaints, and lead odour/rogue discharge investigations.

·        Manage sampling equipment inventory, procurement (via Oracle), and support technology trials and innovation projects.

·        Participate in the on-call rota, respond to pollution incidents, ensure Health & Safety compliance, and maintain stakeholder relationships.

Requirements:

·        Higher level education in a relevant science or environmental subject

·        2+ years experience working n a water or wastewater scientific role

·        Knowledge and understanding of wastewater treatment processes and analytical techniques carried out in wastewater

·        Proficient IT user, including Microsoft office packages

·        Full UK driving licence

·        Able to participate in an on call rota
