Role Overview
The Commercial Director is responsible for leading and developing the commercial function within a growing service-based organisation with multisite operations and multi-service contracts. The role ensures the commercial strategy aligns with the wider business vision, focusing on sustainable growth, enhanced profitability, improved processes, and robust financial governance. Acting as the senior authority on all contractual and commercial matters, the Commercial Director oversees reporting, performance management, and the commercial capabilities of teams across various service lines and accounts.
A key element of this role is providing strategic insight and regular reporting to the Board, driving commercial excellence, and equipping operational leaders with the tools and information necessary to manage costs, optimise revenue, and meet financial targets. The position requires ongoing evaluation of financial performance, ensuring full compliance with organisational policy, regulatory requirements, and best-practice commercial processes.
Main Responsibilities
The Commercial Director contributes to organisation-wide decision-making, shaping commercial strategies that support corporate objectives while tailoring the approach to evolving business needs. The role acts as the primary point of contact for commercial finance teams, offering leadership, mentoring, and professional development.
This position requires building strong, collaborative relationships across the organisation, modelling behaviours expected of senior leadership, and taking ownership of key business initiatives when required. Responsibilities include producing inputs for Board reports, annual budgets, business plans, and commercial reviews.
Commercial oversight extends to national bid reviews, monitoring and challenging financial outcomes, identifying risks and opportunities, and communicating trends and insights to leadership. Ensuring timely and accurate management accounts, commentary, and financial system integrity is essential. The role works with stakeholders to enhance systems and processes while reviewing contract performance, supporting gross profit improvement plans, and enabling strategic decision-making.
The Commercial Director participates in management meetings, supports target setting and bonus structures, and partners with operational and commercial teams on P&L, cash flow, and balance sheet preparation. Additional responsibilities include implementing efficient operational controls, delivering training on budgeting and forecasting, building strong internal stakeholder relationships, and fostering a collaborative team culture.
Person Profile
Candidates ideally should hold a professional accounting qualification (e.g., ACA, CIMA, or equivalent) and have a track record in commercially driven environments. Experience managing multifunctional service lines, leading teams, interpreting contract documentation, meeting strict deadlines, and delivering high-quality analysis is essential. Strong communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to thrive under pressure are key attributes.
