Flexsource NI are working in partnership with the Agrifood and Bioscience Institute (AFBI) to hire an Animal Breeding and Genetics Scientist
This is a temporary full-time position for up to 3 months, based in Hillsborough.
Main Duties:
Conduct research into animal breeding, genetics and genomics to support improvements in livestock productivity, health, welfare and sustainability.
Analyse phenotypic, pedigree and genomic data to identify genetic traits associated with performance, fertility, disease resistance and other economically important characteristics.
Contribute to the design, development and evaluation of breeding programmes aimed at improving genetic gain within livestock populations.
Apply quantitative genetics, statistical modelling and bioinformatics techniques to interpret complex datasets and generate evidence-based recommendations.
Support genetic evaluation projects through data collection, quality assurance, analysis and reporting of findings to internal and external stakeholders.
Investigate genetic factors influencing animal health, welfare, resilience and disease resistance to support sustainable livestock systems.
Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including animal scientists, veterinarians, industry partners and policymakers on research and knowledge-transfer initiatives
Prepare technical reports, scientific publications and presentations to communicate research outcomes and support evidence-led decision making.
Assist in the development of innovative methodologies and technologies that enhance genetic evaluation, breeding efficiency and livestock performance.
Criteria:
MSc or PHD in Animal Breeding, Genetics, Biology, Agriculture or a related field
Strong knowledge of quantitative genetics, breeding programmes and genomic selection
Proven ability to analyse complex and biological and genomic datasets
Experience applying animal breeding principles within commercial farm systems
Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills
Strong written and verbal communication skills
