The capital’s ascent is driven by the rapid digitisation of biotechnology and a growing concentration of computational biology and AI research talent, cementing its position as the sector’s commercial and scientific nerve centre. Cambridge is staging a dramatic recovery, with vacancies forecast to grow by 23.2%, a sharp reversal from a 17.4% contraction in 2025. The city’s resurgence is led by an extraordinary surge in R&D and pure research roles, reflecting a decisive shift toward computational and in silico discovery models. Oxford, meanwhile, is experiencing a structural realignment, with early-stage research roles expanding while traditional laboratory positions continue to contract</strong>.
