About the Company
Our client is a leading engineering and manufacturing organisation supplying innovative equipment and solutions to the biopharmaceutical manufacturing industry. With decades of industry experience, the company provides a comprehensive range of engineering, design, manufacturing, commissioning, qualification and service solutions.
Their expertise includes process and equipment engineering, site services, bioreactors and fermenters, filtration and chromatography systems, preparation and hold systems, and cleaning and sterilisation equipment.
The company is continuing to grow its design team and is now seeking an experienced Mechanical Designer to join their team.
The Role
Reporting to the Design Team Leader, the Mechanical Designer will be responsible for the design, development and release of engineering deliverables for pilot and commercial-scale biopharmaceutical manufacturing equipment.
The role will focus primarily on the design of pressure vessel assemblies, fluid and gas handling systems, and motorised agitation systems, using Autodesk Inventor and AutoCAD.
This is a detail-focused role that will require the successful candidate to develop a strong understanding of ASME/BPE bioprocessing equipment standards, while working closely with engineering, project management, manufacturing and customers.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop and maintain detailed engineering drawings and assembly documentation.
- Review and interpret customer specifications, requirements and technical documentation.
- Produce and maintain 3D models, detail drawings, spool drawings and Bills of Materials (BOMs).
- Create and maintain piping arrangement drawings, including top assembly and piping modules, using P&IDs and customer specifications.
- Design and maintain agitation system assemblies.
- Develop and maintain component BOM documentation.
- Prepare and process Engineering Change Notices (ECNs) in line with company procedures and best practices.
- Maintain accurate project files and design documentation.
- Participate in design reviews with internal teams, customers and project management.
- Record design review actions and ensure required changes are communicated effectively to the project team.
- Provide technical and manufacturing support relating to released designs and documentation.
- Produce accurate as-built documentation for Quality and project requirements.
- Work collaboratively with Project Engineering, Project Management, Manufacturing and other internal departments.
- Manage priorities effectively to meet project deadlines and customer commitments.
- Travel domestically and internationally when required.
- Undertake additional project and design-related duties as required.
Requirements
- Level 6 qualification in Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) or equivalent.
- At least 1 year of postgraduate experience in drafting and design.
- Experience with 3D parametric CAD software.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Word and Excel.
- Strong understanding of drafting standards, design fundamentals and fabrication processes.
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Good organisational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
- Willingness and ability to travel when required.
Desirable Experience
- 1–2 years' experience in a related engineering or manufacturing environment using 3D parametric CAD software.
- Experience carrying a design project from initial concept through to production.
- Experience preparing and processing ECNs, BOMs and technical design documentation.
- Previous experience using Autodesk Inventor, particularly Routed Systems.
- Experience with Autodesk AutoCAD 2D/3D.
- Experience using ERP systems for item and BOM creation; experience with Syteline would be advantageous.
- Knowledge or experience of ASME/BPE bioprocessing equipment standards.
What We're Looking For
The ideal candidate will be a technically minded and detail-oriented Mechanical Designer who enjoys working on complex engineering projects. You will have a strong interest in 3D design and the ability to interpret technical requirements and translate them into accurate manufacturing-ready designs.
You will be comfortable working in a customer-focused environment, collaborating with multiple departments and taking ownership of your design work from concept through to production.
