Overview
We are seeking an experienced Retail Operations Manager to work alongside the business owners to lead and develop the day-to-day operations of a busy and growing trade-focused retail business.
This is a hands-on leadership role suited to someone who thrives on the shop floor as much as in strategic planning. You will oversee operations across sales, people, product, pricing, customer relationships and commercial performance, ensuring the business runs efficiently while delivering exceptional service to trade and retail customers.
The ideal candidate will come from a builder’s providers, construction supply, agricultural retail or trade-based retail environment, bringing strong commercial awareness and a practical approach to managing teams and operations.
This role offers the opportunity to play a key part in shaping the future growth, strategy and operational excellence of a well-established business.
Key Responsibilities
Operations & Leadership
- Oversee the day-to-day running of retail and operational activities, ensuring smooth, efficient and profitable performance.
- Lead, motivate and develop a high-performing team across sales, yard, and store operations.
- Maintain a strong hands-on presence on the floor, supporting staff and engaging with customers.
- Ensure excellent customer service standards across all areas of the business.
Commercial Performance
- Drive sales growth and margin improvement through strong product management and pricing strategies.
- Monitor and manage stock levels, product mix and supplier relationships.
- Analyse sales and operational data to identify opportunities for improvement and growth.
- Work closely with suppliers to ensure competitive pricing and product availability.
Customer & Market Engagement
- Build and maintain strong relationships with trade customers, contractors, and local businesses.
- Identify opportunities to grow market share within the local construction and sectors.
- Support marketing initiatives and promotions that drive customer engagement and sales.
People Management
- Recruit, train and develop team members.
- Foster a positive, accountable and performance-driven culture.
- Manage staff scheduling, performance management and ongoing development.
Operational Improvement
- Identify and implement process improvements to increase efficiency and profitability.
- Manage cost control, operational budgets and performance targets.
- Ensure compliance with health & safety, operational and company policies.
Strategic Contribution
- Contribute to the long-term strategy and development of the business.
- Identify new opportunities in products, services, or operational improvements.
- Support the owners in driving sustainable business growth.
Candidate Profile

Key experience and attributes:
- Proven experience in retail operations management or branch management
- Background in builder’s merchants, construction supply, hardware retail, or agri retail
- Strong commercial awareness with a focus on sales, margin and cost control
- Natural people leader who can motivate and develop teams
- Hands-on, proactive and solution-oriented
- Strong customer relationship and communication skills
- Ability to balance strategic thinking with day-to-day operational management
