Purpose of the role:
The Environmental Manager will be responsible for promoting good practice relating to environmental management, sharing best practices and learning, contributing to environmental strategies, plans and processes in terms of environment and sustainability (E&S), and to provide health and safety requirements and progress reports to ensure that all environmental consents and sustainability matters are implemented effectively, helping to facilitate construction in a compliant manner and good performance across the company.
The role holder will ensure that the company is complying with all environmental policies and procedures, and other environmental commitments, including those arising from planning requirements throughout its construction, assist with regular reporting, site inspection, monitoring the operational function and service delivery to ensure that controls are being implemented according to the company’s requirements.
Responsibilities:
· Manage and ensure that the Project is set up and delivered successfully in terms of environment and sustainability (E&S).
· Working with the Authority, Client, company teams as well as external stakeholders and interested Third Parties to ensure E&S constructability is considered at all project early-stages, planned for and costed appropriately prior to construction activities
· Manage and ensure that the project complies with all environmental legislation, consents, permits, licences, objectives, targets and other company environmental commitments, including those arising from planning requirements throughout its construction.
· Preparation and submission of Amendments to the Projects Consents/Permits/Licences in conjunction with the Construction teams.
· Plan accordingly to ensure future works are resourced appropriately.
· Support upcoming work winning activities to ensure environmental compliance and sustainability are effectively considered and costed.
· Cooperate and manage environmental inductions, training, toolbox talks, and emergency simulations to all staff involved in the construction of the Scheme, including site team, supply chain staff and interested third parties.
· Assisting with the development of emergency and safety procedures and training of staff in the use and disposal of spillage control equipment as required and how to manage the communication
· Promote a positive environmental culture through proactive engagement and communications with project teams, including the supply chain.
· Implement follow-up corrective actions to ensure compliance with regulations and legislation.
· Monitor performance of Environmental Advisors/Assistants, Ecological Consulting Works, Environmental Management Representatives (EMRs) and Sustainability Co-ordinators.
· Produce, review and update the Project Management Plan including key plans as the Construction Environmental Management Plan (CEMP) and Sustainability Action Plan (accord with BREEAM) and specialist procedures as appropriate.
· Collaborate in the Review and Approval process of relevant documents (CEMP, RAMS, ITPs, Inspection checklist) in consultation with the Project Manager and the appropriate statutory bodies.
· Undertake continuous Risk Assessment and Work Package Plan reviews to ensure that these documents are suitable and sufficient for the tasks to be undertaken and comply with the minimum company requirements. Support the Hazops identification during all the project stages, including commissioning and O&M. Detail review of the Environmental elements of the Risk Register.
· Maintain records, minutes, registers and data as required. and update plans and procedures including the CEMP during the works.
· Keep record of all activities on Site, environmental problems identified, transgressions noted, a schedule of all tasks undertaken, and provide appropriate professional and practical advice and support to contractors, consultants and project team members associated with environmental issues.
· Coordinate and undertake regular site inspections with the construction teams to monitor compliance with the environmental regulations/licences/consents for the works and environmental plans and procedures.
· Assist site team and Supervisory staff in undertaking project related Work Package Plans method statements and risk assessments in line the company requirements.
· Act as a point of contact between the regulatory authorities (Environment Agency, Local Authorities) and other third-party consultees and the project on-site based issues.
· Interface with the site team and the Authority/Clients Environmental personnel.
· Undertake Environmental compliance evaluations, inspections and internal audits at prescribed intervals record outputs and liaise with site management to ensure actions are completed.
· Investigate environmental incidents and near miss events in accordance with the company’s standards to identify and share lessons learned. Monitor and report to line management the implementation of actions to prevent recurrence.
· Being fully aware of and actively complying with policies and procedures relevant to your own responsibilities and to corporate policies and procedures including equality, sustainability and the environment, health and safety and data protection
· Additional duties associated with the role as determined by management.
Experience and knowledge required:
· Relevant bachelor's degree (Hons) in Environmental Studies or equivalent.
· Knowledge of environmental control systems.
· 4-5 years’ experience in a similar role.
OR
· 5 years of practical experience in Environmental Management within construction/ engineering industry in a similar role.
AND
· Knowledge & understanding of ISO 14001 and ISO 50001.
· Knowledge of the sustainability assessment programs that is used to masterplan projects, infrastructure and buildings, as BREEAM certificate (Design Construction or Construction)
· Passionate about the construction and building industry.
· Good verbal and written communication skills.
· Capable of working on own initiative and as part of a team.
· Excellent attention to detail and meticulous planning and organisational skills.
· Flexible Approach with ability to define goals and plan to deliver them.
· Working knowledge of IT software in particular the Microsoft suite; to include Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Word.
· Takes ownership and accountability for tasks and sees through to successful completion.
· Ability to seek out and deliver innovative methods of training and instruction, together with adaptive styles of communication with the workforce and staff alike.
Desirable Criteria:
· Relevant CSCS or CSR Card.
· Knowledge and understanding of Environmental, ecological issues and applicable legislation.
· EcoW accreditation
· Investigation (root cause analysis) techniques for incident investigation.
· Knowledge of Irish Regulations
· Airport work experience advantage.
