We’re not career coaches
The most common misconception about recruiters is that we can tell you what you should do for work, or help you to decide what to do. That’s not what we do. In fact, recruiters spend most of their time looking for people who are really clear on what they want to do. That’s because clients hire us to find the perfect person for a specific job they need to fill.
We don’t work for you
This brings us nicely to our second item – recruitment agencies work for employers, not candidates. That may sound harsh, but it is important to understand the difference. Employers hire recruitment agencies to find the best person, so our responsibility will always be to the employer and the role first.
But that doesn’t mean we don’t have your best interests at heart
Having said that, it is important to understand how important it is that we place the right people in the right jobs. Employers hire us because we have a full view of the employment market and are better placed than they are to find the right person. If we place you in a role that you’re not suited to, you won’t be successful in the role and the client won’t use us again. It’s vital that we find the best fit in terms of role, culture, personality and salary – which is exactly what you should be looking for too.
In fact, your good news is our good news
On that point, it’s also important to consider how recruitment agencies and recruiters get paid. When we place you in a job, the agency is paid commission based on a percentage of your new salary. In other words, the more you get paid, the more we get paid. More than that, the individual recruiter earns commission as a percentage of the fee paid to the agency – everybody benefits when you get a big offer.
And we can help you to find a job
All of which brings us back to the idea that we help you to find a job – we don’t – but that doesn’t mean we don’t help you with your job hunting skills. Face to face meetings and mock interviews are vital to that coaching process. When you apply to a role through an agency you have a unique advantage over someone who applies direct with a CV. We get to talk to you, to understand how you present at interview and how your personality fits with the employer. When we put you forward we don’t just hand over a list of qualifications, we explain why you – not just your qualifications– are right for the role.

It’s also important to understand that we don’t just work on jobs you could apply to yourself. We work hard to build databases of strong candidates who we can call straight away when a job comes in and place them without ever having to advertise. In other words, there are jobs available right now that only a recruiter can get for you.
Recruiters are hired by employers. We find people for jobs, not jobs for people. It’s important that you understand that. Just remember that even though we don’t work for you, we will do everything we can to get you that perfect job.
