Semi‑Senior Auditor (SME Practice Focus)
Role Overview
As a Semi‑Senior Auditor within an SME-focused audit practice, you’ll support audit engagements for small and medium-sized enterprises. You’ll assist in planning, executing audits, preparing financial statements, mentoring junior staff, and interacting with clients—all while applying SME‑specific accounting and audit standards.
Key Responsibilities
Audit Planning & Fieldwork
- Support senior staff in planning SME audit engagements, including risk assessment, scoping, and staffing.
- Carry out substantive testing on account balances and transactions.
- Assess internal control systems and note control weaknesses commonly seen in SME operations.
- Maintain clear and organized audit workpapers supporting key conclusions.
Financial Statements & Reporting
- Help draft financial statements using SME-appropriate frameworks (e.g. FRS 102, GASPME, IFRS for SMEs).
- Draft management letters and communicate audit findings in a practical, client-friendly way.
- Ensure audit deliverables comply with quality, regulatory, and firm standards.
Training & Team Support
- Supervise and review junior auditors, offering constructive feedback.
- Deliver on-the-job training in audit methodology, documentation, and SME‑adapted procedures.
Client Engagement
- Serve as a contact for clients during audit engagements—request documents, clarify items, collect necessary files.
- Explain audit steps and findings clearly in client-friendly language.
- Suggest improvements for internal control and accounting processes based on audit observations.
Practice Development & Administration
- Contribute to proposals and client tender responses tailored to SME audits.
- Collaborate to refine audit templates, methodologies, and tools aimed at SME engagements.
- Track time effectively across multiple SME audits and manage administrative responsibilities.
Qualifications & Skills
- Part‑qualified (e.g. ACA, ACCA, CPA), with approximately 2+ years of audit experience—within SME or mid-tier practice environments.
- Experience working in SME-specific accounting standards (FRS 102, GASPME, IFRS for SMEs) and auditing standards (ISA/IAASB, GAAS) is ESSENTIAL.
- Proficiency with audit tools like CaseWare or IDEA, and strong MS Office skills.
- Effective written and verbal communication—able to liaise confidently with clients.
- Excellent organisational and time‑management skills to juggle multiple engagements.
- Supervisory aptitude and coaching mindset when guiding junior colleagues.
