Higher Scientific Officer in Fresh Water Fisheries
Location: Belfast (with fieldwork across Northern Ireland)
Contract: Full-time, up to 51 weeks.
CPL NI is seeking a Higher Scientific Officer to coordinate and support a study on the invasive zebra mussel within the Neagh-Bann system. The role will assist the project leader in two key work programs:
WP1: Investigating the potential spread of zebra mussels from fish stocking events.
WP2: Studying the reproductive biology of zebra mussels in the Neagh-Bann system.
This is a hands-on role involving field and laboratory work, including outdoor work in challenging conditions and sampling from small vessels.
Key Responsibilities
· Coordinate and undertake scientific sampling of fish and zebra mussels.
· Conduct laboratory analyses and maintain high-quality data.
· Manage staff during field and laboratory activities.
· Disseminate findings at knowledge transfer events.
· Produce technical reports with findings and recommendations.
Essential Criteria
Applicants must have, by the closing date:
· Either: A PhD in Aquatic Science, Environmental Science, or a related field
· Or: A Degree (or higher) in Aquatic/Environmental Science plus at least 2 years’ post-graduate experience in scientific data management (spreadsheets, databases, GIS).
And:
· Proven post-graduate experience in planning and executing fieldwork in environmental or aquatic science.
· Evidence of being a named author on at least one scientific paper related to aquatic or environmental science.
· A full driving licence for manual vehicles suitable for fieldwork (reasonable adjustments considered under DDA).
