Microbiology Medical Scientist (Part-Time, 20 Hours)
Summary
Microbiology Medical Scientist supporting the safe, compliant, and efficient day-to-day operation of BD’s microbiology laboratory. This is a hands-on, laboratory-based role focused on microbiological testing, laboratory safety, and adherence to GLP and biosafety standards.
Responsibilities
- Support the safe and efficient operation of the microbiology laboratory in line with health, safety, and quality standards
- Prepare microbial cultures, reagents, and perform routine microbiological testing
- Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment
- Write, maintain, and enforce laboratory procedures and SOPs
- Support and train non-scientific staff in the safe handling of live organisms
- Facilitate laboratory access and induction for professional visitors
- Maintain accurate laboratory records in compliance with GLP and biosafety requirements
- Conduct routine laboratory safety checks and walkthroughs
- Manage laboratory inventory including stock monitoring and replenishment
- Support internal and external audit activities
- Collaborate with EHS, Facilities, and cross-functional teams
- Identify and implement best-practice operational procedures
- Support the introduction of new technologies and laboratory improvements
- Ensure adherence to quality assurance standards and professional codes of practice
Requirements
- Registration on the Medical Scientists Register maintained by CORU
- Fellowship or eligibility for Fellowship of the Academy of Medical Laboratory Science (FAMLS) or equivalent
- Membership or eligibility for Membership of the Academy of Medical Laboratory Science (MAMLS) or equivalent
- Experience working in a hospital microbiology laboratory
- Minimum of 2 years’ post-qualification experience
- Strong knowledge of ISO 15189 requirements
- Up-to-date knowledge of antimicrobial susceptibility testing and guidelines
- Familiarity with laboratory information systems
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, planning, and organisational skills
