Senior Mechanical Design Engineer - Permanent | Full-Time | Onsite Role: Grange, Co. Sligo, Ireland
We are partnering with a well-established engineering and manufacturing business that designs and delivers bespoke processing and material-handling solutions for regulated industries. Due to continued growth, the company is seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join its on-site design team in Grange, Co. Sligo.
This is a hands-on senior role combining technical design excellence with leadership responsibility. It will suit an experienced design engineer who enjoys mentoring others, improving design processes, and contributing to high-quality, right-first-time engineering solutions.
The Role
As a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer, you will play a key role within the Design Department, demonstrating strong technical capability while helping guide and develop the wider design team. You will work closely with Project Engineers, Manufacturing, Quality, and Installation teams to ensure designs are delivered efficiently, accurately, and to the highest standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the creation of detailed 3D parts and assemblies using SolidWorks
- Produce complete manufacturing drawing packs, including drawings, BOMs, laser profiles, and work orders
- Review and approve drawings and participate in structured design reviews
- Develop and implement design standards, processes, and best practices
- Plan and coordinate daily design activities, providing technical guidance to team members
- Mentor and develop junior design engineers, encouraging knowledge sharing and continuous improvement
- Work closely with Project Engineers to ensure design requirements are met and projects are delivered on time and within budget
- Capture and incorporate design changes arising during manufacturing, installation, or commissioning
- Liaise with customers and suppliers during design reviews and technical discussions
- Conduct site visits for surveys, information gathering, and customer engagement as required
- Promote a right-first-time design culture and ensure compliance with quality and legislative requirements
- Identify cost-saving opportunities and improvements in design and manufacturing processes
- Support cross-functional teams with technical expertise
Experience & Qualifications
- Degree-qualified in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline (or equivalent industry experience)
- Proven experience in a senior mechanical design engineering role within a manufacturing environment
- Demonstrated experience mentoring or leading design engineers
- Strong proficiency in SolidWorks (essential)
- Experience with AutoCAD 2D is advantageous
- Solid background in sheet metal and fabrication design
- Experience transferring bespoke designs into production environments
- Knowledge of food processing or regulated manufacturing industries is desirable but not essential
