IDA Ireland is the agency responsible for the attraction and retention of inward foreign direct investment (FDI) into Ireland. The IDA plays an important role in Ireland's relationship with foreign investors, with multinationals accounting for 10.2% of employment and 66% of Irish exports.

The IDA partners with investors to help them to begin or expand their operations in the Irish market. It provides funding support to research and development projects and has a number of direct support mechanisms, including employment and training grants.

Following an in-depth sourcing and interview process, an internal hire was made with Cpl Executive managing the offer extension with the internal candidate.

Executive Recruitment for C-Suite Leader

IDA partnered with Cpl Executive Search to attract a pool of candidates for a Divisional Manager and Executive Team Member role, based in Limerick. It was our responsibility to recruit, retain and develop the best person on the market for this role.

The position reports to Mary Buckley, Executive Director IDA. The candidate required a strong executive leadership background with experience in project management, client-focused relationship building, and sales and marketing.

The personal specification for this role was crucial as the role required a professional leadership style with the ability to contribute to the execution and evolution of organisational strategy across the IDA.

The challenge was to identify external candidates equally as strong as the internal pool of candidates interested in the role. We were advised that there was a strong internal interest in the role.

Cpl Executive Search met with the client and scoped out the role, The IDA provided us with the responsibilities and requirements of the role. We presented candidate briefing packs and a research target list to the client. The approach was to identify strong leadership executives across a variety of sectors, including international trade and development, non-profit organisation management, financial services and government administration.

Our task was to identify and engage with top candidates across sectors such as these, in addition to a targeted online advertisement.

The results:

  • We engaged interested and appropriate candidates and presented weekly updates of screened candidates. We received a lot of interest in the role from the Irish diaspora looking to move back to Ireland.

  • After several weeks of engagement / interviewing candidates, we presented a shortlist of the most qualified candidates, mix of internal and external, based on our in-depth analysis and appraisals against the specification.

  • Each candidate was given a score/rating, based on their competency interview.

  • We managed the interview process and hosted the client interviews on our premises.

  • After a day of back-to-back interviews, we had a debrief with the IDA, they made a decision on the elected candidate and in this case, it was an internal hire.

  • We managed the offer extension with the internal candidate. We closed off all applications with written confirmation.

  • We engaged with 47 candidates, interviewed 38 interested candidates.

  • From these 38 interviews, 7 progressed to shortlist interview, and from this pool, the appointed candidate was selected and successfully placed into the role.
