Library Assistant required for a public service institution in Letterkenny
Grade IV - €19.84 per hour
Initial 12 month agency contract
35 hours per week
We are looking for an enthusiastic and organised Library Assistant to support the day-to-day running of a busy library. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys helping people, working with information resources, and contributing to a collaborative team environment.
The successful candidate will help ensure library users can easily access information resources for research, learning and professional development while maintaining a welcoming and efficient library service.
Key responsibilities include:
- Providing a friendly, welcoming and efficient service to all library users.
- Assisting users in person, by phone and by email with accessing library resources and services.
- Registering new library members and introducing them to available resources and services.
- Helping users operate library equipment and resolve basic technical issues.
- Troubleshooting common access issues with library accounts, platforms and applications.
- Maintaining the library space and ensuring it remains a comfortable and well-organised environment.
- Carrying out day-to-day administrative tasks using the Library Management System.
- Maintaining accurate user records in line with data protection requirements.
- Reporting issues with library equipment, technology or facilities and liaising with relevant support teams when needed.
- Assisting with the management and development of the library collection, including shelving and stock maintenance.
- Supporting basic cataloguing tasks under the guidance of the Librarian.
- Managing inter-library loan and document supply requests and maintaining related records.
- Collecting and maintaining library usage statistics.
- Ordering and monitoring stationery and other library supplies.
- Handling incoming and outgoing library post.
- Supporting the preparation of materials for information skills training.
- Contributing to the promotion and visibility of library services, including attendance at events where appropriate.
- Participating in library projects, initiatives and service improvements as required.
- Keeping up to date with new resources, tools and developments in library services.
- Providing cover for the Librarian when required.
- Taking a flexible and proactive approach to supporting the overall library service.
Requirements:
- Experience of working in a library setting is required
- Ability to develop a working knowledge of library procedures and services.
- Strong communication, customer service, and interpersonal skills.
- Good ICT skills and confidence using digital systems.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
- Good judgement and initiative when responding to user queries.
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and work effectively under guidance.
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to prioritise tasks and meet deadlines.
- Professional approach that reflects positively on the library service.
